What is the chassis number?

The chassis number, or VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a set of alphanumeric digits that uniquely identify each vehicle on the market. It’s like its ID card.
It consists of 17 digits (numbers and letters except for the characters I, O, Q, and Ñ). Each of these digits provides specific information about the vehicle.
  • Digit 1: Country of manufacture. Those starting with the letter W have been manufactured in Spain.
  • Digit 2: Vehicles Brand.
  • Digit 3: Manufacturer.
  • Digits 4-7: Vehicle-specific characteristics, such as the engine or chassis type, etc.
  • Digit 8: Restraint systems (seat belts, airbags) incorporated into the model.
  • Digit 9: Verification code according to ISO 3779 standard.
  • Digit 10: Year of manufacture. If the car was manufactured between 1980 and 2030, it is represented with letters; on the other hand, those manufactured between 2001 and 2009 are represented with a number.
  • Digit 11: Vehicle production plant.
  • Digits 12-17: Manufacturer’s production number.

What is the chassis number / VIN used for?

Thanks to the chassis number / VIN, workshop operators can access all the information related to a vehicle, from its date or place of manufacture to the type of engine it uses, as well as how many times it has been serviced, if it has been modified, buying and selling operations, import/export movements, thefts…

Where is the chassis number / VIN located on a car?

The best way to find it quickly is on Vinfindercar, as it is usually engraved on the chassis, although not in a fixed location for all brands or models.
Sometimes it even changes location within the same model, but in a different generation.
